My suggestion is to enable a user to save their build templates onto their account rather than on their computers hard drive.

I often switch from playing on my dads computer to playing on my home computer, I also modify my builds and attribute points. Since the templates are stored on the hard drive, I have to write them down on paper or take a screenshot everytime I play on a different computer. This can be quite a hassle considering I have 10 different builds for my monk.

Does anyone understand what I mean? Anyone agree with my suggestion?

Saving builds is a neat feature that was requested by many players. I believe the only way ANet is willing to offer this feature is if Templates are saved to users'
hard drives. If Templates were saved to the server, they would take up a great deal of space on their servers, and they would have to limit the number of Templates per account. Also, saving to the hard drive enables players to share builds with great ease. There are too many benefits to having templates on the hard drive. For your situation, just use a USB storage device to copy the Templates back and forth; they are located in: ....Guild Wars/Templates/Skills.

No. Why?

Templates have two reasons:
- Quick-change templates.
- Share with others.

Making templetes have to download, may slow down a bit the process (not much, really, nothing noticeable, just a really few bandwith)
But this would completely banish the 'share'.
Aditionally, you currently have no limit for Templates, but making them online would set a limit of how many you can have.

Good idea but there are some people who have dozens of templates, such as you having almost a dozen builds for a single character. This, as said above would likely mean we are limited to the number we could save on the server.

One suggestion for your particular case is to get a USB drive and copy the templates to that when switching computers. Floppy disks should work as well if both computers have a drive for them.

You could store them on a USB Key but I would prefer mine on my HDD.

Well what I'm saying is give the user choices when saving a template...

- Save templates to hard drive (default)
- Save template to user account (maximum 5 templates per character)

I fail to see how templates could use so much space on the server, they are 1kb each on my hard drive and with compression or another format, they could be even smaller.

Thanks for everyone who suggested I save my templates to USB drive/floppy disk. This is a great idea! I will surely use it.

What I would like to see is an ability to rename my templates. To rename my templates, I have to delete a template and create a new one just to change it's name. Surely it wouldn't be hard to rename the templates. I notice you can rename the txt files in the Guild Wars directory, but having this feature in game would be nice.

c:\program files\guildwars\templates\skills

copy to some form of external storage, place medium in new computer, compy back to the above location, all templates now in place. No need to transfer yet more files via the internet.

well as other people mentioned, it will take up server space and bandwidth to save on the server. sure, each template takes up a minimal amount of space but multiply that by the number of people who play guild wars and then multiply that result by the number of templates each person takes. it'll probably add up eventually unless anet put on some kind of limit.

the current system on the hard drive probably works best for both anet and most players. not many players play on more than one computer and for those that do, its not that hard to save the templates to a usb drive or some other portable storage. for those of us that have more than one account, its also useful since we can access the templates from any account on a computer.

I could care less, but if it causes more networking it won't make the lag problem any better, I would also be afraid of a max. A slight compromise would allow the user to set where the templates are saved/loaded to on the drive...

The builds are stored in seperate txt files in the Templates\Skills\ directory of the GW installation.
You can e-mail them to yourself (with a hotmail/yahoo/whatever account).
You will always have them online that way.
And with the limited size of the files and the 'unlimited' mail-box size, you could even keep track of changes.
